Clouded Leopards - Diet
Clouded Leopards are carnivores. They hunt small mammals including squirrels, wild pigs, birds, and even deer. The species has also been reported to hunt domestic stock. The Clouded Leopard is mostly nocturnal. However, it may hunt during day or night.
Earlier, it was believed that the Clouded Leopard hunted mainly on trees. This misconception was due to the species secret life style and arboreal nature. It has been established, however, that Clouded Leopards hunt on the ground. They either stalk their prey, or jump on it from a tree.
Clouded Leopards - Reproduction and Life Cycle
Clouded Leopards are ready to reproduce at the age of two years old. No one has ever seen the species breed in the wild. Knowledge about reproduction and life cycle in the Clouded Leopards are based on the data gathered in captivity.
Clouded Leopards mate usually in December through March. The gestation period is about 93 days. A litter averages two kittens. The litter size may reach 5 cubs. Females can give birth yearly. The kittens are born blind. Their eyes open at the age of 10-12 days old. By the age of 6 months, little Clouded Leopards attain adult coloration. They can do well without mother assistance when they are 10 months old.
Breeding Clouded Leopards in captivity is not very fruitful. These wild felines tend to be very aggressive towards other-sized animals. Attempts to breed the animals in captivity often ended in fights between mates and even the death of a female. Introduction of males and females to each other from an early age helps to lessen aggression between the animals. Clouded Leopards tend to live about 17 years in captivity.
